This Year’s Met Gala Begs One Question: How Do We Define Avant-Garde?

Ah, the Met Gala. A beautiful affair filled with buzz and excitement as some of the most highly-regarded faces within arts and culture come together. This year’s theme was “Rei KawakuboComme des Garçons,” a designer known for breaking binaries and challenging the status quo. With the invitations requesting guest attend the gala dressed avant-garde, it raises the question of how we translate such a term into fashion. Defined as, “new and unusual or experimental ideas, especially in the arts, or the people introducing them,” this note invited guests to roam freely within their varying degrees of interpretation.

Some kept it minimal, like Kim Kardashian looking stunning in a white gown. Others, like Solange, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Rihanna, truly challenged the evening’s theme, turning the red carpet into their own laboratory, conducting a personal study on what it means to indulge in unusual fashion, experimenting with silhouettes, fabrics, and colors. Below is a round-up of my favorite looks from the 2017 Met Gala. What was your favorite look? And, more importantly, how do you define avant-garde? Drop us a line in the comments.
