A Midweek Meditation on #NoDAPL

Midweek Meditations is a weekly column written by Julia-Elise Childs where she rounds up her favorite happenings in fashion, art, culture, and beyond. We figure that despite living fast, we should probably catch our breath every now and again.

This week, I’m offering a meditation on tangible action we can all take. Thanksgiving isn’t only a commercial holiday where we gorge ourselves on turkey under the guise of celebrating fabricated history. It’s an opportunity to give back and to give love. It’s a chance to chat with loved ones about issues they may not be familiar with.

The people of Standing Rock are in distress and mainstream media has been dishearteningly quiet. For those of you who aren’t familiar with #NoDAPL, I highly recommend you listen to Another Round’s latest episode featuring Dr. Adrienne Keene. Keene, a professor at Brown, breaks down the many layers of threat and disrespect the Dakota Access Pipeline proposes.

Here’s the plot summary: The DAPL is proposed to transport 450,000 barrels per day of Bakken crude oil – which is highly volatile and fracked – from North Dakota to Illinois. This pipeline is an environmental nightmare and is highly susceptible to spills and leaks, thus threatening Standing Rock’s water, wildlife and land integrity.

Below are some ways we can take action and help those fighting the Dakota Access Pipeline
