Big things are happening in Oakland these days. Someone recently told me that Oakland has more artists per capita than any city in the country. Though I’m not positive that fact is 100 percent accurate, it’s hard to deny the exploding art scene and exciting energy everyone seems to have about living in the city across the Bay. Today marks a big day for Oakland art aficionados, with the opening of Athen B. Gallery, which aims to nurture the “elusive artistic sub-culture that typically lives in the shadows of the art world, not properly recognized or celebrated.”
In tandem with the VSCO Artist Initiative, the gallery commissioned Cannon Dill and Brett Flanigan for two walls slated to go up in the next few weeks, as well as one that was just completed by artists Ernest Dotty and Ryan Montoya. Also this week, new work by two of your faves, Meggs and Zio Ziegler, grace Oakland’s city streets. Join us tonight at the inaugural exhibition “House Warming” – an impressive group show featuring artists Aubrey Learner, Brett Flanigan, Caleb Hahne, Cannon Dill, Dan Hampe, David Bray, Eric Bailey, ESK, Ian Johnson, Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada, Katherine Rutter, Lauren Napolitano, Lauren YS, Martina Merlini , Meryl Pataky, Moneyless, Over Under, Rachel Mandala, Skewville, Spencer Keeton Cunningham, Troy Lovegates, Word To Mother and Zio Ziegler.
Make your way out tonight to Athen B. Gallery in downtown Oakland (1525 Webster St.) for the 7 p.m. opening of “House Warming.”
