Kimberly Genevieve is one of the most creative people I know, and one of those photographers who can turn the simplest of moments into pure aesthetic magic. Her colorful lifestyle editorials blend California’s sun-kissed surfer vibes with chic urban fashion. In this interview, we talk about her inspiration, her future projects and her love for the city she chose, Los Angeles.
If – like us – you can’t get enough of her work, check out the other editorials she shot for us – an intimate Hotel Tour at Santa Monica’s Hotel Shangrila and a gorgeous stroll up to the Hollywood sign with some of L.A.’s baddest babes. You can also visit her portfolio here.
LF: When did you first pick up a camera?
KG: I was really young when I first borrowed my father’s AE-1 in the 90’s. I was probably 6 or 7. But I often tell people I was 9 years old because that’s as far back as I can remember. I was a spontaneous kid running around town photographing people, mostly musicians.
LF: Who and what inspires you?
KG: I am hugely inspired by my friends and the people that surround me. Their success and hard work continuously inspires me to better myself! I’m really lucky to know so many creative people in Los Angeles, and I believe that when you associate with successful people in the creative world, it helps you to achieve your goals. As a photographer, it’s so important to connect with other photographers and to collaborate and let your minds brainstorm together. The potential is so much bigger that way, and just that alone inspires me tremendously!
LF: Are you influenced by the city you live in? Do you feel like your work changed since living in Los Angeles?
KG: Absolutely! I moved to California for the experience and the lifestyle. I never thought once school was over that I would want to stay here permanently. Los Angeles influences the pictures that I take and the style of photography that I love the most. I can honestly say that I found myself as an artist here in Los Angeles. The colors, the never-ending sunshine, and the playful nature of my photographs are all influenced by the city I live in. I don’t think I had a clue who I was or what I wanted my photos to look like before moving here, but I am so sure of it now when I look through the viewfinder.
LF: What’s the best and worst thing about working with your boyfriend?
KG: I get to spend every single day working with my best friend, and we only have to set one alarm clock which is super helpful in the morning!! We also get to build and accomplish our dreams together. The worst part about working together is that I can get pretty bossy with him, especially if I have a certain vision in my head and he has no clue what I’m talking about. That can create a little tension between us.
LF: What’s the craziest job you’ve had in the past few years?
KG: A job that requires me to work with “BIG” L.A. type personalities is always a crazy job, but thankfully that’s the type of crazy I absolutely love. If every job was exactly the same, this career would quickly become redundant.
LF: What are you working on, either a finished work or in development that we can look forward to? What’s your musing for it?
KG: I’m working on a few different projects at the moment, but the one I am most excited and passionate about is a joint project between myself, Andre, and Jihan Zencirli from Geronimo Balloons. I can’t say too much about it right now, but what I will say is that this project has us hitting the road across California, one of my favorite things to do and it has absolutely nothing to do with balloons.
LF: What’s next for you? What is your vision for the future?
KG: I want this passion to take us on the road together, often! I want us to get hired for work across the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and so many more places! I want to find ways to travel and take pictures for a living! Traveling is so important, and I’d love to keep my portfolio updated every few months!
