Art is one of the most truthful, authentic and universal statements we as human beings can make. The creativity comes from deep within, and in the craze of trying to balance a work life with a creative life, it can be hard to find these moments. I had the opportunity to spend some quality time this past week with Monterey, Mexico-based artist Rene Almanza, as he set up his show at Fifty24SF, and it was a spectacular reminder of the importance of constantly pushing our creative juices.
He arrived in SF with fifty graphite drawings and worked tirelessly for a week painting – night and day – literally. He did take a break to check out funk band The Monophonics with us (one of my faves), but pulled it all together with a BANG the night of the show (not to mention, he sold a ton of really cool pieces, including one to me!) I felt humbled and ecstatic (at the same time) to hang out with such a kindred artist, who I can now call a friend, and I’ll be able look on my wall every time I need to jump start my own creative flow. Have a look at his beautiful (and sexy) charcoal and watercolor pieces:
