I fell in love with Los Angeles at first sight. Something about the city sunk its teeth into me and wouldn’t let go: the swaying palm trees, the year-round blanket of hazy heat, the shimmering blue smear of the ocean in the distance, the endless sprawl of neighborhoods waiting to be explored, the infectious hum of creativity. It seemed to exist in a perpetual golden hour, glowing with possibility, haunted by its glamorous history. Every time I caught a glimpse of the Hollywood sign, my heart skipped a beat. But I came to realize that although LA is an easy city to fall head over heels for, it’s not necessarily the easiest place to live. The honeymoon phase of my LA love affair was quickly eroded by slow crawls through rush hour traffic and a sweaty summer without air conditioning.
But that’s the thing about LA: it keeps its guard up until you prove you’re worthy. Existing at the crossroads of big city and small town, it’s everything all at once, complicated and exhausting and nearly impossible to fully comprehend. But if you stick it out, the city rewards you with unexpected delights around every corner: restaurants tucked into strip malls, hikes that lead to burbling waterfalls, and gorgeous gems of luxury and history hidden in plain sight in the heart of downtown. The first time I stepped foot into DTLA’s recently reopened Hotel Figueroa, it reminded me why I fell in love with this city in the first place.
A rejuvenating reprieve from the disarming chaos of the city, this flawlessly renovated historical landmark turned luxury hotel embodies the moody magic and indescribable appeal of the city of angels, and has become our new favorite spot for everything from pool parties to lunch meetings to romantic staycations. Despite being surrounded by the hustle and bustle of everything downtown LA has to offer, Hotel Figueroa feels like a secret the city shared with only you, dreamily blurring the lines between old school glamour and contemporary cool. With two restaurants (including a Basque-inspired brasserie) and four bars on the property, as well an iconic coffin-shaped pool amidst a lush botanical hideaway, a soul-soothing weekend spent here is just what the doctor ordered to remind you why you just can’t seem to quit LA.
The historic hotel, which originally opened its doors 1926 as a progressive safe haven for female travelers has recently undergone a long-awaited transformation, the full and stunning scale of which will be revealed at their 92nd birthday celebration on August 14th. The renovation finds the hotel reclaiming its legacy and paying homage to its badass history with female-centric art adorning the walls and timeless touches of Spanish Colonial styling scattered throughout the chic and cozy suites. Take your pick from seven signature suites, all of which embody and exude the eclectic free spirit of LA, offering a warmth and luxury that just might make you forget you’re staying at a hotel.
Our personal recommendation is the Casablanca, a unique creative haven which takes inspiration from the hotel’s rich bohemian history. Complete with a glass-ensconced rain shower, a spacious parlor lined with leather-bound books, and a secret passageway leading directly to the reservation-only Bar Alta (don’t sleep on their bespoke cocktails), it feels like the ideal place to hole up and recharge your creative batteries or sneak away for a glamorous getaway steeped in old school romance.
While you’re there, don’t forget to duck into Veranda, the hotel’s buzzed about al fresco restaurant. A poolside eatery seemingly plucked from paradise, it’s the perfect place to refuel after a sun-drenched day of lounging, swimming, and cocktail-sipping. Find a spot on the brightly-hued patio and take in the vibrant Mediterranean vibes over fresh salads and flavorful flatbreads. We can’t think of a better way to soak up a warm summer evening. The addictive, ethereal magic of LA is indescribable, but it just may have found its match in Hotel Figueroa.
