Preview: Scarlet Mann and Karen Bystedt Unite for Epic Duo Show “Liberation” (NSFW)

We live in a world with limitless options. Thanks to technology, nearly anything is possible – you could meet your soulmate on Tinder, start a social movement on Twitter, be discovered on Instagram, and see your best friend who lives across the globe on FaceTime. With so much freedom comes a stifling sense of anxiety that begs the question of what liberation actually looks like. Artists Scarlet Mann and Karen Bystedt have set out to explore this in their duo show presented by Taryn Manning, “Liberation.”

Scarlet Mann spent the past year traveling the United States in a VW van with her husband and two sons. During her time on the road, she developed an introspective series of photographs titled America and I: A Conversation with Reality and the Elusive Dream. In this series, she journeyed through natural environments, capturing herself nude, wearing only a gas mask, a decision she cites as “being a strong allegory of toxicity rampant in our society.” As for the nudity? Scarlet shares, “Being in the nude, for me, is the most organic human state without all of the facades of social standards. It represents liberation, the feeling of complete freedom, and a void of rules and expectations.”

Karen Bystedt explores a different type of liberation as she dives into the dating app world in her series Texting, Sexting, and Intimacy. After enjoying a long marriage, she found herself single and ready to date once again. Subsequently, she decided to dip her toes into the array of apps the dating world now offers. Her works explore the empowerment that she found on Bumble, an app created by two women that requires women ‘to make the first move.’ A different, yet equally enthralling, type of liberation.

The show opens with an artists reception from 6pm 1o 10pm on Wednesday, April 18th at Bruce Lurie GalleryUnable to make the opening? Works will be on view until May 3rd!
