Meet Penelope Gazin and her Monstrous Maidens (NSFW)

If you’ve spent enough time on the Internet there’s a good chance you’re already familiar with the peculiar work of LA-based artist, Penelope Gazin, though you may not have known it. Having done work for VICE, GIPHY, Burger Records, and even FoxADHD for Fox TV, she’s a hard one to miss. However, if this name is new to you, allow us to introduce you to an artist with her hand in just about every creative outlet imaginable.

Painter, illustrator, animator, music maker, dancer, and pin-slinging co-founder of Witchsy, Penelope Gazin is a creative hustler with a style entirely her own. When asked to describe her work in three words, Ms. Gazin chose “sexy, sad, and sassy,” and we think she hit the nail on the head. Very much inspired by pain and sex, her art is like a mashup of 80’s horror films with dominatrix babes donned in latex, only the roles are reversed and these damsels aren’t the ones that need saving.

A public fan of psychedelia, graphics for her work have often been inspired by visuals seen and feelings remembered during her experiences on mushrooms. Her dry sense of humor best witnessed in conversation – though also evident in her art – is clearly not intended for any other purpose than her own amusement. Why else would someone create a pin that says, “Butt Club”? (Because she can.) Occasional mushroom trips aside, Penelope Gazin has got to be one of the hardest hustlers around. Last year she and co-founder Kate Dwyer launched their online artist collective and marketplace, Witchsy, which currently hosts 275 artists and designers.

Hailing from a family of artists, young Penelope was a fan of Betty and The Veronica, The Far Side, and Mad Magazine, leading her to create work of her own. Though they have a humorous sibling rivalry, Penelope has shown work alongside her brother and fellow artist, Nick Gazin, and the two recently had their show Teenage Tears on display at Superchief Gallery in NY, a follow up to their show Gazinizag at Superchief Gallery in LA late last year.

When she’s not painting her latest “fuck-dungeon”, making gifs, or designing lapel pins and bolo ties, you can find Penelope dancing for the LA City Municipal Dance Squad, which un-officially performs halftime dances for women’s community basketball games. She trained professionally as a ballerina for a decade, however these days she says she prefers to do her own “Frankenstein style,” usually in her bedroom, often to 90’s hip hop like Return of the Mac.

Her work, though too grotesque for the faint of heart, is as unique to her as her mind itself. And while ‘creepy cute’ isn’t for everyone, we think she’s on to something great. Lose yourself in her work here.
