Alexa King’s American Dream is Haloed in Cigarette Smoke and Rodeo Lights (NSFW)

Nashville-based photographer Alexa King calls her work American Dreams and Suburban Secrets. She has a highly imaginative eye with a flare for the mundanely outrageous. King’s work stands out against it’s own backdrop of truck stops, strip clubs, rodeos, and middle America front yard-scapes. She has a way of blurring the line between recreation and happenstance, making all the world appear as a stage.

It was her images of country singer Caitlin James that first hooked me and soon I was down the rabbit hole of her imagination. I spent my afternoon lost in images that spun stories in my head, startled me and turned me on, often in the same frame. And I became a forever fan when I saw her Rodeo Series, and the unmistakable influence of films like Virgin Suicides, Drugstore Cowboy and True Romance. There is a sadness in her work that feels very honest – the sexy underbelly of what we truly are, the American dream gone awry or simply something we’ve always just settled for. Whatever it is, I cannot get enough.
