Cycles + Sex: A New Form of Sexual Education in an Era of Uncertainty

It feels as if we are stuck on a teeter-toter, existing at once in an era of sexual freedom and an era of uncertainty. With major reproductive health providers like Planned Parenthood under constant threat thanks to our current administration, it feels that despite the sexual fluidity and openness associated with my generation, we are often faced with a barricade separating us from inclusive sexual health educaiton. Furthermore, if you are someone that falls outside the black and white understanding of gender and sexuality, it is even more difficult to find sexual information and celebration that is catered specifically to you. The latter was heavy on my mind when Cycles + Sex was put on my radar. I was curious if this self-dubbed “reproductive health and justice event” would be inclusive, featuring a range of activists and educators – or would it only appeal to the individuals high school sex ed was based off of?

Turns out Cycles + Sex is rather inclusive. Functioning as a single day event, the happening takes a holistic approach to sexual education and celebration. Rather than solely focusing on periods, this activation takes a look at everything – like preparing for childrearing, the separation of gender and sexuality, hormonal birth control, period cups, nipple clamps, and natural sex toys. In case you’re wondering how to get your Diva Cup to stay in place or are looking for an independent provider of trans health care, look no further. Their debut event took place on April 30th, however a podcast will be available in the coming weeks for those who were unable to attend. Visit their website for more information.
