Midweek Meditations is a weekly column written by Julia-Elise Childs where she rounds up her favorite happenings in fashion, art, culture, and beyond. We figure that despite living fast, we should probably catch our breath every now and again.
There’s levels to accepting our new president-elect. The first level is not accepting him at all. The second level is praying that our precious Earth will remain intact and protected throughout his unfortunate presidency. The third level is realizing that we are now in a country governed by someone who writes off climate change as a hoax. The fourth level is finding action.
We are not helpless.
Inspired by Patagonia donating all Black Friday proceeds to grassroots environmental groups as an initiative to save the environment, I am meditating on how we can help the earth. Coral reefs are bleaching at alarming rates, temperatures are rising globally, wildlife is suffering. This is the only earth we’ve got. We must take action.
Donate, Donate, Donate
Need a gift idea? Donate to an environmental group in a loved ones name. Need some inspiration? The Sierra Club is the oldest and largest environmental group. Wildlife Conservation Society is dedicated to saving wild animals and plants. The Ocean Conservancy advocates against practices that threaten marine life and hosts a wealth of action-based information. Our friends at PangeaSeed are amazing at creative art that pushes forward dialogue about global ocean environmental issues. You can find even more options here. Bottom line: Support those doing the work that you cannot do. Join those doing the work that you can do.
Use Your Voice
Speaking of joining those doing the work that you can do – I bet if you’re reading this, you’re capable of writing an e-mail and/or signing a petition. Get on it. Put some pressure on President Obama to spend his final days in the office safeguarding our environment from Donald Trump. Tell Congress to support the Paris Climate Agreement. Spend some time finding petitions that speak to you and align your voice with them.
This is an environmental issue just as much as it is a cultural issue. If you haven’t already, please educate yourself (last week’s Midweek Meditation is great place to start, if I do say so myself) and consider donating your time and efforts to support this cause.
