KISSKILL’s new FW16 collection “Purple Rain” highlights the strengths of this relatively new, but fast-growing Australian label. Never forgoing beauty for practicality, or vice-versa, KISSKILL excels at producing garments that are as wearable as they are visually enticing. The brand walks the line between hard and soft, as one might expect from their name. Classic lingerie cuts- bras, briefs, thongs, slips- are given one or two significant features, such as an interesting decorative detail or attention-grabbing color, making their lingerie as worthy a purchase for daywear as it is a weapon of seduction.
“Purple Rain” features new designs, as well as re-releases of recent bestsellers. The collection, predominantly in black and the titular purple, features a wide and differing range of styles. Lace and silk are a nod to the eternal appeal of ‘boudoir’ in the form of a lace-trimmed robe, the sort of investment piece you would never regret. The much-loved ‘Bond’ bra and brief, previously released in emerald green, looks even better in this season in KISSKILL’s perfect shade of purple. Both bra and brief feature metal zip fastenings at the front, for either ease of wear or a dramatic and showy removal. A lace-trimmed, lilac leopard adds a playful edge to ‘Cassie’.
The intricate, bondage-influenced ‘Addict’ bra and cage briefs add a hard edge to the collection’s softer styles and is KISSKILL’s take on lingerie’s ubiquitous strappy trend. Conveniently, KISSKILL’s interpretation features all adjustable straps, eliminating a lot of cutting and digging that comes with similar styles by other brands. Aesthetics aside, this means customized fit for comfort or size fluctuation. On the other end of the spectrum, a divine three-piece set in eyelash lace is exactly the sort of thing I recommend for lingerie novices to aficionados to lingerie-as-gift buyers. A black set, consisting of a functional bra and brief, plus suspender-able-to-hold-stockings is a never-fail in general, but this version by KISSKILL comes in an eyelash lace so exquisite it gives me butterflies. It’s truly a thing of beauty.
Here’s where I admit, that I am no stranger to KISSKILL. The ‘Tiah’ set, released last year, was named after yours truly. Upon seeing and wearing the underwire bra and bikini brief, I was beyond flattered to have my name attached to such an awesome style, one that ticks all my personal preferences too, being sexy, comfortable, practical and just quirky enough. The lace bra has sheer, boned cups and a supportive, lightly padded quarter-cup beneath the breast. It features a detachable collar with lace appliqué that fastens at the back of the neck and onto the bra in the center of the cups. Worn with, the bra can be a statement piece, an interesting shape and provider of an alluring detail to peek out from beneath one’s clothes. Without it, the bra can function as any classic, supportive black lace bra can. The ‘Tiah’ style, upon release, became KISSKILL’s fastest style to sell out ever.
On the loungewear front, there is a chic, Dietrich-esque silk pajama pant, paired well with the ‘Fleur’ triangle lace bralette for a relaxed, but pretty, look. The ‘Rhiana’ slip I cannot recommend enough. A perfect-fitting, good quality silk mini-slip is a lingerie staple. Think Kim Basinger in ‘Nine and A Half Weeks’ and basically, every silver screen seductress ever. Waif thin, athletic or curvaceous, a well-cut silk slip is eternally flattering for any body, as well as a sensory delight. ‘Rhiana’ is simple and flattering at the front, but features a low back with criss-cross spaghetti straps. I guarantee it will be the garment you reach for anytime you want to feel good or relaxed.
And if for some reason, beautiful lingerie isn’t your thing (why are you still reading this?), KISSKILL stocks a strong edit of accessories, ranging from the hardcore to humorous. These guys clearly have a naughty sense of humor. Glitter pasties in stars and lightning bolts from Bijoux Indiscrets can be found amongst high quality leather harnesses from specialist designer Lady Bellentina and a rainbow of silk stockings by Cervin. Or perhaps you fancy a silk eye mask with delicately embroidered instructions to ‘Fuck Off’? The latter is high on my wish list and will definitely be pulled out for my next long-haul flight or horrid hangover.
Many lingerie labels aim to hit the ‘fashion lingerie’ market, the massively sweet spot between every day lingerie and elaborate, but occasionally intimidating, seduction wear. Few truly mange to walk the line though. But KISSKILL does, a label that excels in both practicality and visual appeal with lashings of attitude. “Purple Rain” is all the evidence you need.
