Chantal Thomass is the mother of modern French lingerie. For forty-one years the designer has produced high-quality luxury lingerie with consistently interesting designs that never compromise on glamour. There is always a new and unique influence to Thomass’ classic Parisian pin-up stylings. For spring/summer ‘16 Thomass adds flavor in the form of Latin American spice, giving new meaning to the term ‘Southern Belles’ with ‘Viva La Vida Latina’.
The strength of Chantal Thomass, along with impeccable quality, is this ability to tap into feminine fantasies, a variety of lust-worthy archetypes and reference them in her designs clearly, without ever verging into ‘tacky’. Thomass babes rule the golden ground of sassy and sexy. Previously designing the sort of lingerie you could imagine Marie Antoinette in (pastels, feathers, jacquard) or a bad-ass Russ Meyer biker (a recent set that resembles a leather jacket!), this season’s styles are what Salma Hayek would wear in most people’s wildest dreams and what I would definitely pack for a trip south of the border.
‘Viva La Vida Latina’ takes South American sartorial icons and spins them into never-before-seen lingerie looks. ‘Bandanana’ is just that – an homage to the humble kerchief. In red, black and floral, mixed with lush lace the bandanana fabric is are twisted and tied into briefs and bras that ooze attitude.
The white-trimmed navy ruffles of ‘Mambolita’ offer movement and all the flounce of flamenco as frills layer shoulders and form a miniskirt-like detail on the back of a thong. This look is feminine and romantic, yet completely original.
Ellen Von Unwerth, Thomass’ long-term collaborator, perfectly captured in their campaign images all the sass and originality that makes this collection a standout. ‘Viva La Vida Latina’ took a reference and turned out some truly original pieces that are cheeky and feminine. Lingerie that will no doubt be on many aficionados lust-lists for years to come and proves why Chantal Thomass is top of the game and a label always worth investing in.
