Revenge Porn is the Saddest Trend Sex Has Ever Seen

In recent months, the term “revenge porn” has been appearing in various headlines. Revenge porn is sexual media content that is distributed without the consent of the individuals involved – so, a small-scale example of this is when an ex-boyfriend distributes a nude photo of his girlfriend for public consumption. This could mean he sends it in a group text to his friends or it could mean he sells the photo to a revenge porn website, which is essentially a porn site completely dedicated to sexual content depicting innocent and unknowing participants. Needless to say, this is a disgusting breach of one’s personal rights and is a sad side effect of our technologically savvy, media saturated world.

You probably saw photos of Jennifer Lawrence’s naked body when her personal devices were hacked. Maybe you’ve had someone share one of your sexual photos or videos without your consent. This trend in sex isn’t necessarily new, although it seems to be steadily inching towards its demise. The operator of one of the largest revenge porn sites was recently sentenced to eighteen years in prison. He made $900 a month in ad revenues and collected $30,000 from victims. A 14 year old boy living in the UK was selling nude photos of his 14 year old girlfriend and was taken to court. I say that perhaps this era of sexual exploitation may be reaching its demise is because these cases are actually being taken to court. They are not being ignored. There may be some sliver of hope that our bodies will be protected from these gross violations.

Despite my hope for revenge porn to end all at once, the reality is that it is only illegal in 17 states. A woman just copyrighted her breasts to protect herself. The fight isn’t over. To learn more about your rights and to join the fight against revenge porn, please visit here.
