This weekend, former Kronick Magazine photographer, Paul Chan launches his solo show at Slow Culture entitled “OFF SAFETY.” If you’re familiar with hip hop you may recognize the phrase for being synonymous with guns, but Chan translates this notion into a shooting of a different kind. The concept of OFF SAFETY refers to Chan’s readiness to shoot and capture moments at any given time and situation. The exhibition features imagery of notable artists including, Eminem, Dr.Dre, Snoop Dogg, Wu-Tang, Cam’ron, Birdman, Lil Wayne, and The Hot Boys.
Chan amassed these photos while working as an art director and photographer for afore mentioned, Kronick magazine between 1997-2003. Tired of stock press release photos from record companies, Chan realized original photography was a must. Shot entirely on film, some pictures were used in the magazine, however Chan managed to capture shots of the artists in a unique documentary-style that has gone on to become a historical document to what some call the “shiny suit” era of rap music.
These pre-internet era, ‘up close & personal’ shots give us insight into a more candid side of these artists in a time when they were portrayed to be extravagant thugs. With only three days to view this rare show, make sure not to miss out.
