Interview Series: Jessica Lewis

Chris Steinbach recently photographed the beautiful Jessica Lewis in this series of nudes, and we thought it would be the perfect time to catch up with this modern day wonder woman. Born in Toronto, she likes to refer to herself as a product of the world, since she’s lived all over it throughout her 14-year modeling career. She is also the creative director at GLASSbook; beautiful, smart, and creatively driven… we’re crushing hard on this high-spirited lady.

Q&A

LF: Hi Jessica, how are you today?

JL: Fantastic! It’s Valentines day morning, I’m in love and I have a coffee in hand. Really can’t complain.

LF: Where are you from?

JL: I always say I’m a product of the world. I’ve lived everywhere over the years, but I’m proud to have been born in Toronto, Canada.

LF: How did you get into modeling?

JL: I was scouted at 15 years old. I did straight size modeling for 10 years or so, took a year off and came back to the world of plus!

LF: Tell us one thing you really love about the industry…

JL: The creativity! Growing up my own creative side was really nurtured and realized due to all of the amazing minds I’ve had the privilege of working with. I also love how free and liberal we are as an industry. That combined with the progressive nature of fashion and the arts make for great excitement and motivation in my job.

LF: And something you don’t love about it…

JL: In my experience, sometimes an image or style that’s created in this industry is so striking or thought provoking that we have a tendency to get stuck on it, and have almost a fear of stepping into something new because we have developed such a love/found such success with the current image. It’s a comfort zone thing I think. There are those who live to push boundaries, and those who stick with the tried tested and true method. This is true of any industry. C’est la vie.

LF: IMG recently announced “We want to be an ageless, raceless, weightless agency. We just want to rep the best people in the industry.” What are your thoughts on this?

JL: I think it’s fantastic! It’s exactly where the industry needs to go to revolutionize itself as well as make itself relevant to the increasingly diverse society we’re living in. Beauty comes in MANY forms and truly is in the eye of the beholder, be it from a size, ethnicity or age perspective. I applaud any agency that supports that.

LF: How do you feel about being labeled as a “Plus Size” model?

JL: Haha. Ah. I know in the world outside of fashion I don’t come close to “plus”.  I’m not a very curvy woman, I have petit bone structure. At any given time I’m between a size 8-12. I’m fine with it. If thats my label in the world of fashion so be it. My personality and confidence come before my size in my mind.

LF: What has been your favorite city to work in?

JL: For years I used to say Tokyo. The people and spirit of that city got me. Lately though I’m having a love affair with New York. I moved here almost a year ago and it’s been gradual. I spent most of my years modelling in Europe and Asia so New York has been like that lover that comes out of left field and sweeps you off your feet for me.

LF: What do you do on your down time?

JL: Down time. Sounds delicious. Haha. I don’t have much down time. I creative direct at GLASSbook magazine as well as model so that takes most of my time. I do enjoy going upstate on occasion with my boyfriend though. He has a cabin there and it has no internet, phone or television. It’s glorious.

LF: What turns you on?

JL: Too many things to list. I’m a lover so once you’ve piqued my interest it’s not hard. A talented person who’s humble with a beautiful soul is high on the list though.

LF: What turns you off?

JL: Conceited people. Big time. I’ll run for the hills so fast. I hate it when people define themselves by what they have and who they know. And a Kanye West/Miley Cyrus baby.

LF: If you could give your younger self any advice, what would it be?

JL: Buy Apple stocks. Haha. I’ve done everything I wanted to, sometimes it worked out in my favor, sometimes not so much. It’s all part of the journey. Can’t say I would change anything. I always knew it would work out eventually.
