Out of all the walls in Kaka’ako, Fresh Cafe’s parking lot is perhaps the most sought-after location of Pow Wow Hawaii – a real honor for any participating artist. This year, the hot spot was assigned to prolific L.A.-based collective, CYRCLE.
Thematically and stylistically, this powerful piece is in line with CYRCLE.’s upcoming solo show titled “OVERTHRONE! POORING REIGN,” for which Davey and Rabî have been studying and exploring ancient Greek and Roman art/sculptures that glorify power.
“The series explores symbols of power and the reign they have over our minds. We take these symbols of power and deconstruct them by either scrambling, glitching, redacting, or simply flipping them upside down in attempt to suggest overthrowing the reigns of power,” the artists explain. Their show opens March 7 at London’s Stolen Space Gallery.
I’m always interested in the exploration of a shared creative process, especially when it comes to such well-rounded artists, so stay tuned for our upcoming studio visit with the dynamic duo when they return from the UK. And psst. there’s only three days left to scoop CYRCLE.’s Pow Wow 2014 print, “Rape of Sabine,” on 1xrun. You’d be silly to miss out.
