The good homies and Baker Skateboards team riders Don Nguyen and Sammy Baca have had a secret project in the works for a while now. Well, not so much a secret as it is a rad new clothing and accessories line called Volume 4, which crowds of kids (of all ages) have been lining up to get their hands on. This past Friday, the much awaited Volume 4 site launched along with the release of new photos and video from the team’s first skate trip through the desert.
These dudes are as real as it gets, living and breathing their “Live Heavy, Travel Light” motto; which has seriously struck a chord among musicians, skaters, and pretty much anyone who lives life on the road. We got Nuge to fill us in on the past, present and future of his passion project and skateboarding’s newest craze. The brand is pushed by Baker Boys Distribution and can be shopped here.
LF: Describe Volume 4 in a few words…
DN: Skateboarding, traveling, music, records, camping.
LF: Before it all began, what was your vision for the brand ?
DN: I wanna travel and skate forever and this is a way of doing that while doing something creative. Seeing something in your head is one thing, making it into something physical that people can see and hold is really sick.
LF: Besides founding it, what roles do you and Baca play in the company ?
DN: We are the minds behind the brand. We wanna do things the way we want. We’ve seen how people have been doing it in the industry, and we want to do it a different way.
LF: How do you see Volume 4 evolving ?
DN: Our roots are in skateboarding. We will always stay true to that. Another big influence is music. Right now we are doing a collaboration with The Shrine and we wanna keep doing things with sick bands when it make sense.
LF: How did you come up with the itinerary for the trip ?
DN: Me and JRoy sat down and plotted. We always just think of what’s gonna be good for skating obviously and wherever has the best weather.
LF: What are 5 tracks on your playlist right now ?
DN: Witchcraft “Leva,” Graveyard “Satan’s Finest,” Deadman “Going over the hill,” Great Mammoth “Desperation,” Grave “Morning Sun.”
LF: What’s the one thing you never want to travel without ?
LF: Favorite thing about life on the road ?
DN: Life on the road.
LF: What does it mean to travel light ?
DN: Don’t bring it if you don’t need it. You should be able to survive for at least a month with just carry-on luggage.
LF: How fast do you live ?
DN: Faster than most.
