Raw For Beauty

Anyone who’s done their fair share of sunbathing knows that very intense heat can get to you, and that long hours in the sun will leave you drained and even sometimes, achy.

Dehydration is the reason why some of us get that headache or uneasy feeling towards the end of a long day at the beach. When our body temperature rises, we perspire in order to cool our bodies back down. But when we sweat too much and become overheated, the body is exacerbated of the necessary vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes that keeps us feeling good and full of energy.

One of the best foods to hydrate the body is the watermelon. Interestingly, this fruit coincidentally comes into season precisely when us humans could benefit from it the most; summertime.

Watermelon contains very high levels of vitamins C and A; which are both immune boosters, and additionally serve to benefit our bodies in many more ways. The red fleshed fruit is also very rich in minerals and electrolytes. Because of this, consuming watermelon creates a great electrolyte/mineral balance within the body; thus hydrating the body. Watermelon, similarly to coconut water, is considered to be “nature’s Gatorade.” However, in contrast to Gatorade, watermelon is considered to be on of the most alkalizing foods that we can consume, while processed sports drinks tend to be very acidic.

In addition, you wouldn’t think so, but watermelon is a great source of protein for all of the non-meat eaters out there. It is also a beautifying food; meaning it is great for your skin, hair, teeth, eyes, nails, and so on, all due to it’s high vitamin and mineral content. Summer is here and watermelon is one of the best food to cool, hydrate, and nourish your body with. Pick up a watermelon from the farmers market and blend up one of these delicious watermelon shakes.

Watermelon Shake Recipe:

- 2 to 3 cups watermelon, or however much you desire

- Juice of 1 to 2 limes

- A few sprigs of mint

Combine all ingredients into blender. Blend. Garnish with lime wedge and mint leaves. And if you shall dehydrate while dehydrating, throw in a little tequila, triple sec and orange juice in there, and you’ve got yourself a delicious watermelon margarita.
