Preview: Helmut Newton: “Sex and Landscapes” (NSFW)

Known to many as the “King of Kink,” Helmut Newton‘s prolific work blended beauty, eroticism, humor with the worlds of fashion, luxury and power in a revolutionary way – transcending far beyond the spectrum of a conventional fashion photographer. His work for Chanel, YSL, and French Vogue pushed boundaries; his provocative, often shocking images reflected on the sexual revolution of the ’60s and ’70s  in a powerful and elegant manner, positioning him as one of the most influential photographers of all time.

Gallerist Perry Rubenstein, who has compared Newton’s work to that of great film directors like Godard or Fellini, asserts the importance of the artist by coinciding the opening of his new L.A. space with the presentation of a new exhibit titled Helmut Newton: Sex and Landscapes.

The exhibit, which is set to open to the public at Perry Rubenstein Gallery’s new Hollywood location on June 26th, is curated in collaboration with the late photographer’s wife June Newton and features 20 seductive shots of women and 20 landscape photos – combining some of his infamous fetish-style photographs with some of his lesser-known panoramic and aerial shots.

Newton, entranced by his winter-home Los Angeles, was drawn to the city’s “unique blend of glamour and emptiness,” which is exemplified in his Sex and Landscapes collection. His profound work is an embedded part of Hollywood culture, stimulating us on every level – this is not an exhibit you want to miss.
