Season after season, Joseph Altuzarra makes a point to challenge us with unforgettable thematic combinations. His Spring / Summer 2012 collection merges the aesthetics of two opposing worlds creating sleek, sporty, bold and modern designs. Not many would think to combine patent leather with birds of paradise and vibrantly colored chunky knits. But once again, Altuzarra has managed to push the boundaries of what is expected and what can be possible.
Though the runway show began with strong black and white leather pieces, the jungle background instantly came to life as the models began to strut out dressed in Hawaiian tropical prints and vibrant knits.
In an interview with Opening Ceremony, the designer explains how he was inspired by images of Hawaii in the 50s and 60s and the playful and kitsch sentiments of the setting. But instead of creating a collection suited for vacation spots, Altuzarra has designed pieces that will undoubtedly bring the tropics to the concrete jungle!
