Art Crush Obituary: Honoring the Work of Maurice Sendak

I cannot clearly recall the first time I laid my eyes on the precious illustrations of Maurice Sendak, but the images of the creatures from “Where the Wild Things Are” are vividly etched in my brain. It is with great sadness that I relay the news that such an amazing talent has left us today, but his work will remain as beautiful and influential as it ever was. In honor of his death, here are some images of the illustrations of one of the most hauntingly beautiful children’s books ever made…

Maurice Sendak’s work was both widely acclaimed and critically controversial, stepping out against traditional American children’s literature by providing characters that were less than squeaky-clean and well-behaved.

His often unsettling pictures, combined by his rebellious character plots are what transcends this artist into one of the most important children’s book artists of the 20th century. He will be greatly missed.
