SS 2012 Ready-To-Wear Makeup Trends

Christmas, New Year’s, Valentine’s Day were all great, but we’re over holiday makeup. Puxatony Phil saw his shadow and rumor has it that Spring is about to be sprung. So what’s more exciting than a makeup revamp? Less expensive than a closet makeover, yet just as satisfying. Let’s take a look at SS12 RTW for some inspiration, shall we?

Cat eyes. Really though, we can’t stay enough about a well executed cat eye. Clearly, Donna Karan and Badgley Mischka felt us on this one. Retro to boho, some decisive liner goes with almost any get up. Chill out and spare yourself the apprehension; with the right product and a steady hand, you’ll be channeling Brigitte  in less time than it takes to put your wrinkled silk dress in the shower steam and hope for the best. Try MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack with an extra fine brush – we recommend Shu Uemura’s Natural Sable Brush in 2r for the finest tip. The perfect line just takes a bit of planning; decipher the outer most corner for your intended angle and draw your line at a 45 degree angle straight down to your lash base, then fill the rest in. On a budget? Maybelline’s Eye Studio Black Gel Liner in Blackest Black will do the trick as well.

If you’re looking for more of an impact, a bold lip is a pretty consistent crowd favorite. Obvious, yes–but how good is a bright lip? Jason Wu and Oscar De La Renta gave us an unexpected take on the classic red with vivid orange deep blue undertones. Copping a striking pout is as easy as an expert brush, lip balm and a little concealer to prevent feathering. Try colors like YSL’s Fard a Levres Rouge Pur in Indian Orange or Kat Von D’s Painted Love Lipstick in Rosary for your base hue, topped with a hint of moisture from  Kiehl’s Lip Balm or a Burt’s Bee’s throwback to keeps lips looking alive without excess gloss goo, a la Paris Hilton circa 2006.

Feeling a little ravey? Party like it’s 1999 with a metallic shadow lower-lid take over  as seen at Gucci and this Spring. Try sweeping a light-catching cream like Laura Mercier’s Metallic Cream Eye Colour in Alloy or a finely ground mica powder like Makeup Forever’s Eyeshadow in Deep Plum Shimmer Iridescent . CAUTION: if you’re going to go hard with a statement shadow, keep the skin clean and fresh and your lip neutral.

Yeah, Spring/Summer Runways have given us a bright pallet per yuse, but this season does have some exciting new twists. No matter which you choose- make sure to spend a little extra time on your process to cultivate and expert application. Ed. note: Be prepared to keep an eye on your face-canvas throughout the evening, and it doesn’t hurt to keep the cocktail count under three.
