Last week during Basel, Jimmy Iovine, P. Diddy and Andy Valmorbida hosted a lavish party at Mr. Chow at the W South Beach to celebrate the official launch of your new favorite coffee table book of asses, Culo by Mazzucco. I had a chance to chat with photographer Raphael Mazzucco, and here’s what he had to say:
< Bianca Balti >
< Fergie >
< Nicole Scherzinger >
LF: How did you get involved in this project?
RM: Jimmy was discussing the concept with me; “celebrating the female form’s most coveted asset through African, Latin, European, and Asian cultures.” I thought it was a great concept and started to add in details of my own. I traveled all over the world, searching for and capturing both well-recognized and beautiful women that truly embody the word culo. It is a new way to look at beauty.
LF: How would you describe the artistic direction you decided to take in this book?
RM: The direction is a vision developed between Jimmy, Diddy and myself. We would work as a team to discuss who we wanted to shoot and where. Then we would add in layers to the shoot such as the colors of the location and then how we could incorporate the landscape into the art pieces.
LF: You say “it’s all art to me” – must have been a fun casting process anyway. How many different models are you actually featuring in the end?
RM: Approximately 80 different models. Every shoot was a new lesson in uncovering the secrets to photographing a woman.
LF: The book highlights women’s “real curves” – do you think the fashion industry is ready for this?
RM: They should be. Every woman photographed has pure passion, beauty, fire, vitality, authenticity, vivaciousness… Women, especially models, have become even skinnier than in previous years. CULO by Mazzucco is our way of showing the world that a more round, realistic female figure is beautiful and should be acceptable.
LF: The project took two years to complete and took you worldwide – I guess you’re a culo expert now. In your opinion, makes the perfect butt? Which country has the women with the best butts?
RM: From the moment a woman with the spirit of culo walks into the room, my heart pounds from sheer adrenaline. I let that play out in my work. People expect a lot from CULO by Mazzucco, because we are treading a line of sensuality. The book must be visually beautiful and informative.
